Richard Plasschaert
For Richard Plasschaert nature is as
close as his own backyard. A short walk takes him to the nearby woods,
marshlands or vast stretches of farm fields. These surroundings, together
with a rich imagination, provide unlimited reference for his own vision of
the outdoors.
Although Mr. Plasschaert's art was well known in the Midwest, his career
attained national stature when his entry, "Two Mallards in
Flight," was selected as the 1980-81 Federal Duck Stamp design. With
this honor he officially joined the ranks of America's premier wildlife
artists. He recalls with a smile, "It took me 20 years to become an
overnight success." This comment would be a surprise to the many
collectors of his art who already appreciated his attention to subject
detail and warm, authentic landscapes.
In addition to winning the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp competition, Mr.
Plasschaert has created a wide variety of other state and conservation
group stamp designs.
