Richard Luce
Richard Luce paints to please himself and
is gratified if others enjoy his work. A taskmaster to himself, the
criteria for his pleasure is extremely high. Anyone who views a Luce
painting is struck by the reality he captures on canvas. Ideas and
insights gained from reading, and spawned by dreams, come to life as
Richard works his magic with acrylic on linen.
Richard graduated from Duchess Community
College in Poughkeepsie, New York and headed fro Manhattan to find
work. Working as an assistant art director and dealing with big city
traffic, left a stressful Richard seeking a soothing pastime. He
began painting in the evenings. He remembers, "It felt good to
come home and paint for three or four." Because of an interest
in astronomy his first paintings were of planets and the solar
system. "Next I painted seascapes, drawing on my memories of
summers on Long Island, but still I searched for more challenging
subjects." He found them.
Painting Western subjects and wildlife
comes naturally to this artist. His interest and fascination with
American Indians, their culture, religious beliefs and solid values has
enabled him to produce paintings unequaled in excellence in this
field. Richard's sensitivity and devotion to nature and its wildlife
is evident with each stroke of his brush. He dreams of the earth as a
garden with industry carried on in space, thus leaving a purer environment
for all living creatures. It is difficult to imagine this descendant
of Italians from Florence, Italy, being anywhere other than where he is,
or pursuing any other career.
